WORKSHOP DETAILS

Find your own voice and expression!

  • You’ll gain confidence for painting on location
  • I'll offer step-by-step demos for techniques using gouache. You'll learn why it's such a flexible medium with many possibilities.
  • You’ll gain control over perspective, without fear.
  • Discover the true powers of color by working with a limited palette. We’ll walk through a guided exploration of how color really works, and how to “break” the rules.
  • I’ll show you a bold approach painting. This will help you whether you're painting on location outdoors or painting in-studio from references. It can even help jumpstart your work if it's non-representational or abstract imagery.
  • You’ll learn how gouache can help you construct interesting compositions quickly.  You'll discover the freedom, confidence and flexibility to explore further.
  • You’ll gain confidence to move past the “mud” point you may hit in a painting. Discover how to breathe new life into a painting that's 'not working' and resolve it. No painting left behind!
  • Find subjects both vast and small available to us on the beautiful Oregon coast. There are many easy-access opportunies with wonderful beaches and views.

Lunches are included, along with one evening meal.

Enjoy dedicated and peaceful time all your own for painting.

You’ll have access to a lovely studio space to work at your own pace.

Experience the Oregon Coast and the charming coastal town of Yachats. Connect with other artists who share your passion for creativity.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Local Transportation Included in Price?    Yes

We can rideshare for any excursions, though there is much available within easy walking distance of town and the Yachats Commons, where we'll meet for indoor sessions.  And of course, you're welcome to take your own vehicle. Public parking is readily available on the coast.

The charming town of Yachats (say YAH-hots) is named after the Yachats River, and sits at the base of the Oregon Coast Range along the Pacific. It's home to artist galleries and gift shops and hiking trails at gorgeous Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, the highest point of the Oregon Coast.

WHAT TO BRING

Weather can vary hugely, so be prepared for sun, wind, and rain in May.

Comfortable safe walking shoes are a good idea.  Maybe a couple of pair.  I always take extra socks.  There are some truly spectacular beach and old-growth forest hikes withing minutes.  Come prepared so you don't miss out.

Remember your camera, phone and charger!

Bring your own travel easels, chair and gear.  We will have an optional gouache paint kit which will be available closer to the workshop, if you'd like to try your hand with gouache but don't know which colors or brushes or surfaces to buy.

Safety Reminder

Get a tide chart. Your lodgings host will likely have a printed table for you, or you can find one online. Pay attention to tide charts and warnings. Respect the mighty power of Mother Ocean.
