Explore the Power of Gouache in Plein Air Painting - Lower Crooked River Canyon, Oregon

Over 50 million years of geology in the Lower Crooked River canyon. The canyon winds through rimrock, lava formations and river meadows. The summer light is dramatic, defining and mystical. There's something to paint for every mood, every moment.

GOOD TO KNOW

We'll take day trips to paint the wonders of Oregon's rugged and steep Crooked River Canyon. There are spectacular vistas as well as more intimate spaces.

Climate and Conditions

The high desert sun can be intense, so prepare accordingly. It also gets cold at night.

If the fire season is high for the year, we have alternate plans available if it's too smoky to be outside.

COVID

We uphold any current CDC guidelines for masks, sanitation and social distancing.  We follow the guidelines of the hotel, or restaurants or caterers.  We follow current CDC guidelines in the van for day locations.  Please be prepared to show proof of vaccination to attend.

Note from Julia:

After you book, I'll send a workshop agreement to the email address you used for registration.   Both you and I will sign via Adobe e-sign, so we each have a signed copy for our records.  This document states liability and payment/deposit terms. Please return your signed copy immediately on receipt.

Insurance

Travel insurance is not required for this trip. However, if you're flying in, we recommend travel insurance, especially in these uncertain times.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Local Transportation Included in Price?    Yes

We'll have a van (or vans) leaving from Country Inn & Suites by Radisson to take us into the canyon.  Safe, easy pullout parking is very limited on the scenic highway. We'll park in a choice location in one of the campgrounds or day use areas where there are restrooms, and some shade.

You're welcome to bring your own vehicle if you prefer. We recommend ride-sharing if you choose to drive.

WHAT TO BRING

Your plein air easel, or a small lap board with clips to hold your watercolor paper.

Portable stool if desired

Your media and tools: paints, brushes, and preferred substrates (paper, board, canvas). We will have an optional Gouache Paint Kit available with a set of quality paints, a few select and very good water-medium brushes, papers, a small portable palette, a brush dipper and a small spray bottle. If you have questions regarding supplies, contact Julia.

Sunscreen

Skincare:  Hand balm, lip balm, moisturizer (if you're not used to the high desert, it's dry!)

Refillable water bottles, for drinking. We'll have a dispenser of cold water for you to fill your drinking containers. It's super-important to hydrate in the very arid high desert.

Clothing for both hot and cold.  It can be very hot in the high desert, and temperatures can drop radically after dark, so layers are good.

Remember your camera! Or your phone, for taking photos.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

Non-painting spouses or partners of attendees are welcome to join us as guests for no additional workshop fees (excluding meals).
