Capture Coastal Beauty with Gouache: Join me for an Oregon Coast Painters Retreat

Join me for a four day painting and art-journal workshop on the Oregon coast. This paintable coastline is full of drama, amazing coastal forests and beaches along its expanse. Experience the charming coastal town of Yachats.  I encourage anyone who loves to travel and record their memories to join us. No art experience required! Materials for your art journal are provided. An Art Travel journal is great fun, easy for non-artists to do and is a unique way to record your adventure.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

What We'll Be Doing

Because it’s spring on the beach, you might do some quick sketches or painting. You’ll have time to explore the area and use your camera to gather images. Each day there is a fun challenge for your painting and your art journal.

I'll offer step-by-step demos for techniques with gouache, and handy tips for creating a travel journal.

Each day, there’ll be time for instruction and creating in our studio.

Box lunches Friday and Saturday from the wonderful Green Salmon and LunaSea are included.  Green Salmon offers delectable plant-based panninis, with gluten-free options. LunaSea is famous on our coast for their fresh seafood options. Dinner Friday at the amazing and wonderful Drift Inn in Yachats is also included.

When we’re not outside exploring, we’ll be in our comfortable, roomy classroom space in the historic and well-appointed Yachats Commons. The Commons less than 2 easy blocks from the 804 trail in Yachats, Oregon.

  • You’ll gain confidence for painting on location
  • Learn how gouache can help you organize interesting compositions with speed!
  • Find subjects both vast and small available to us on the beautiful Oregon coast. There are many easy-access opportunies with wonderful beaches and views.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Local Transportation Included in Price?    Yes

We can rideshare for any excursions, though there is much available within easy walking distance of town and the Yachats Commons, where we'll meet for indoor sessions.  And of course, you're welcome to take your own vehicle. Public parking is readily available on the coast.

The charming town of Yachats (say YAH-hots) is named after the Yachats River, and sits at the base of the Oregon Coast Range along the Pacific. It's home to artist galleries and gift shops and hiking trails at gorgeous Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, the highest point of the Oregon Coast.

WHAT TO BRING

Weather can vary, so prepare for sun, wind, or rain in May.

Comfortable safe walking shoes are a good idea.  Maybe a couple of pair.  I always take extra socks.  There are spectacular beach and old-growth forest hikes within minutes.

Remember your camera, phone and charger!

Bring what you have of your own travel easel, chair and gear, paints, brushes and papers.  I'll have some gouache paints for you to try.

A starter journal that packs easily is included in the price!

Email me if you'd like to buy an optional high-quality gouache paint kit with 9 colors and 5 brushes. If it's helpful, you can get my Handbook for Gouache Paints here. It's a downloadable reference book for how to choose paints, brushes and papers, and where to find them.

Safety Reminder

I'll provide tide charts, or you can get your own. Your lodgings host will likely have a printed table for you, or you can find one online. Pay attention to tide charts and warnings. Respect the mighty power of Mother Ocean.
